Search guide

Fuzzy search

Quria applies fuzzy search in all alphabetic values, in all search fields in all functions, both in free text search with or without prefixes and refined search (except for values chosen from a list like language, audience and classification). This means that matches similar to the search query will also be listed in the search result and assists the user with spelling.

The fuzzy search allows up to two deviations depending on the length of the word:

  • 0-5 characters: no fuzziness

  • 6-7 characters: 1 deviation

  • >7 characters: 2 deviations

Examples:

  • A search for rowling also returns results with rosling and rolling.

  • A search for robert also returns results with roberts.

  • A search for elisabet also returns results with elizabeth.

  • A search for madelene also returns results with madeleine, madlén, and marlene.

  • A search for madeleine also returns madelene but not shorter forms such as madelen or madlén.

  • A search for adeline returns adelina and madeline.

  • A search for sub:europe also returns results with the subject europa.

When a search string contains more than one word, the words are combined with an implicit AND, and fuzziness is applied to each word.

  • A search for the restaurant at the end of the uniwersum finds the title The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

  • A search for the restaurant by the end of the universe does not find the correct title, as the word by is not present in the title. It is recommended to use only some words from long titles when searching.

  • A search for the greatest show man does not find The Greatest Showman, as show and man are entered as separate words in the search phrase.

How to temporarily turn of fuzzy search

If you do not want to use fuzzy search, you can use phrase search (strings delimited with quotes “ “) or add ~0 to the word. Truncation with an asterisk also deactivates fuzzy.

Examples:

“rowling” or rowling~0 gives only hits with this exact spelling

elizabeth* gives hits with Elizabeth and Elizabethan, but not Elisabet or other spelling variants

What is searchable and how

The data that can be searched differs between the modules depending on the purpose, but the indexed, bibliographic metadata is the same in:

  • Collections/Items

  • Collections/Reservations

  • Collections/Subscriptions

  • Patron/Loans

  • Acquisitions/Requisitions

  • Acquisitions/Orders

  • ILL/Out

  • ILL/In

Here you can search on:

  • Title

  • Creator

  • Publication year

  • Shelf mark (from manifestation)

  • Language

  • Standard numbers (ISBN, etc)

  • Classification

  • Subjects (except in ILL/In)

  • Genre (except in ILL/In)

The search can be dome both in free text and with prefix.

See also: Prefixes for searching in metadata

In Refined search you can also search:

  • Target audience

  • Literary form

  • Manifestation type

Collection/Search and Collections/Titles in demand has a more advanced search function.

  • Search tips

  • Truncating: Use an asterisk (*) anywhere in a word. The asterisk represents zero, one or several characters and the search results will include words with any character(s) where the asterisk is. You can use this when you are not sure of the spelling. Fuzzy search is not applied with truncation.

  • Masking: Replace a character with a question mark (?) anywhere in a word. The question mark represents one character. Fuzzy search is not applied with masking.

  • Phrase search (strings delimited with quotes “ “): The words in the phrase must be in the correct order.

The phrase can be the whole field or part of the field. Fuzzy search is not applied with phrase search.

  • Operators: Construct search strings using boolean operators AND, OR, NOT (capital letters), and parenthesis. If there is no operator, an implicit AND is used.

Sorting of the results

All search results are sorted in an order that is pre-defined for the current module. The column that is marked with a filled triangle is the one that is used as default when the search result is presented. No relevance sorting is applied. This means that the spelling or location of the used search term in the found record has no impact on the sorting if the result. This means for example that:

  • A search in Patron/Search for Henderson in a patron register where there are patrons named Anderson lists the Andersons before Henderson.

  • A free text search in Collections/Search for astrid lindgren that gives 40 pages of hits can start listing titles by Astrid Lindgren first on page 13, after all movies, compilation works, biographies and other titles mentioning astrid and lindgren somehere in the work, expression and manifestation (including description and notes).

  • A free text search for rose in Collection/Search can give many pages of hits with works about cultivating of roses, novels written or translated by a person named Rose, books published by Wild Rose Press and sheet music containing the song La vie en rose.

The impact on the relevance of the search result must be done by the user and the tools for this are the refined search, the prefixes, the asterisk, quotation marks and Boolean logic, and if you are in Collection/Search, also the facets.

Examples:

  • Solve the Henderson case with entering an asterisk after the name.

  • The quickest way to solve the Astrid Lindgren situation if you are looking for her works in Collection/Search is to use the creator facet after having performed the free text search. In other areas, like for example Collection/Items, use for example prefix cre: astrid lindgren*

  • If you are searching for a book about roses but your result seems to overflow with books written by a Rose, try use prefix and Boolean logic: rose* NOT cre:rose. The facets for literary form are also useful here if you are in Collection/Search.
